What is 3D Printing?

3D Printing refers to the process whereby a material is joined or solidified under computer control to create a three-dimensional object.

The creation of 3D printed objects is achieved through the use of “Additive Process”. The Additive process essentially refers to the process of creating an object by laying down successive layers of materials until an object is formed. Each of these layers can be seen as a thinly sliced horizontal cross –section of the eventual object.

3D Printing is the opposite of subtractive manufacturing commonly known as machining which is cutting out/hollowing out a piece of metal or plastic. This can be very time consuming and expensive particularly when machining more complex shapes which require multi axis equipment.

A major benefit of 3D Printing is that the ability to produce complex and functional shapes using less material than traditional manufacturing methods.
